About

Mariangela Tinelli (born 1976 in Ulm, Germany) lives & works in Berlin.

Her fascination lies in spaces of transformation, where change becomes visible and has a life of its own. She is interested in making the audience the witness of the vital process of discovery itself. Her choreography is abstract and informed by experimentation and the traceability of ideas. She has a somatic approach to dance where body and mind are unified in a continuous process and dance becomes a lived experience. She creates conditions/ frameworks for new movements and particular states to emerge. In some of her works the movements are entirely designed to its details within a large context. She works in collaboration with musicians and composers and also with artists of fine art and time-based art. In the act of performance Tinelli finds a paradoxical balance in carrying out a concise plan allowing spontaneity in the materiality of the self as well as in spirit.

Her first work is a duo 'Sketch 1 - Emulating' created and performed at Dansatelier’s Rotterdam, NL, in 2011. Then a solo 'A genuine fake' in 2014, that was shown in theaters in Amsterdam and Berlin. In 2015 she took part in diverse cross-disciplinary and collaborative art projects at Agora in Berlin. She received a comission by german composer Sebastian Elikowski-Winkler to collaborate with six different german and japanese composers and two musicians, which are a klarinettist and a voice artist in ‘Pacifico Exercises: encho’. This work was performed at Acker Stadt Palast Berlin in 2019.

Mariangela Tinelli studied contemporary dance at the Academy of Performing Arts in Amsterdam (NL) from the year 1997 till 2001. She started off as a dancer with the then renowned physical dance theater company, Het Hans Hof Ensemble (NL), with whom an extensive dutch and belgian tour followed. Then for the next fifteen years she’s on stage with diverse international choreographers, like Martin Butler (NL) who is creating visually compelling works, Inaari Salmivaara (FI) who creates conceptual new dance. From 2006 till 2007 she is selected as a dancer for the exchange project ‘Migrant Body’ funded by the European Union, where Tinelli dances with several european new choreographers like Triin Reeman (EE) and Sonia Brunelli (IT) and is on stage with their works in many european countries. Her versatilily in dance and performance develops over the years in the works of exceptional choreographers like Katalina Mella Araneda (CL) at W139 Amsterdam, Pere Faura (ES) at DCC in Shanghai, Jochen Stechmann (DE) at Dokumenta 13 Kassel and Emilie Gallier (FR/NL) at Leiden International Short Film Festival.

Her affinity to performace and video art emerged in connection with performance artists, visual and time based artists by contributing to their new works. As a dancer, performer and actress working with Victor Alimpiev (RU) at Impact Festival Utrecht (Premiere), Julian Hetzel (DE) at Springdance Festival Utrecht and Theaterformen Hannover in 2015,  with Melanie Bonajo (NL) Oude Kerk Amsterdam and Paradiso Amsterdam.
